Rimske Terme – Beautiful thermal resort in Rimske Toplice
Rimske Toplice is a town in eastern Slovenia. The town is located at an altitude of 213 meters above sea level, in a valley surrounded with many forests and hills. Rimske Toplice is mostly known by thermal resort Rimske Terme.
In addition to thermal water and relaxation the resort, Rimske Toplice is an excellent starting point for adventure to the surrounding hills. There are 1122 meters high Mrzlica, 914 meters high Kopitnik, 655 meters high Stražnik and many more.
The outdoor pool is circularly connected to the indoor pool, which means you can take a nice swim. In my personal opinion, it is all the more beautiful in the really cold winter days, when the outside temperature drops below zero. Swimming in the outdoor pool then becomes a real experience.
The first mention of the Rimske Toplice dates back to 1486. Marble artefacts dedicated to the Roman goddess of health Valetudo and nymphs were found at the site of the bath. Rimske Toplice began to develop more seriously in 1840 when they were purchased by Gustav Adolf Uhlich, who is said to have recovered from thermal water at this location.
The resort Rimske Terme was named after the ancient Romans, and the effects of the water have already been recognized by the Counts of Celje and the Habsburgs. Not surprisingly, since 1848, many distinguished guests have been here.
Rimske Toplice fell into the hands of the Germans during the Second World War, who turned the facility of the resort Rimske Terme into a hospital for their soldiers, and later, after World War II, until the 91’s, Rimske Terme were managed by the Yugoslav People’s Army (JLA), which allowed the healing effects of thermal water and the beautiful environment for a narrow circle of officers.
Fortunately, things are changing and today the pleasures and health offered by Rimske terme are available to everyone, not just a select few.
The location is surrounded by beautiful hills. The pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Lourdes, also called Lourdes, is an interesting destination, with some stones in the altar brought from a cave in French Lourdes.
The church of Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1886.
