Stol (Hochstuhl)

Stol is the highest peak in the Slovenian Karawanks Mountain Range - 2236 m.Stol is the highest mountain in Slovenian Karawanks and reaches an altitude of 2236 m, while mountain Triglav is the highest mountain in the Julian Alps and Slovenia in general – 2864 m.

Photos of Trgilav in a gallery below were captured from a great distance during the hike to the mountain Stol. To reach the top point of Stol, you can start from Valvasor’s home (Slovenian: Valvazorjev dom), which is located on the southern side of Belščica.

The location is also known for the iron ore mine. Valvasor’s home is the name that the building received through the famous writer and, for Slovene history an extremely important persona, Johann Weikhard von Valvasor (Orig. Janez Vajkard Valvasor).

Valvasor’s home has special operating hours. The caretakers of this mountain cottage are the Radovljica Mountain Society. Seasonal working time means that during the season it is always open, and in the winter it is open on weekends and holidays.

Stol is the highest peak in the Slovenian Karawanks Mountain Range - 2236 m.Valvasor’s home is in itself a pleasant hiking destination, to which you can start your hiking trip from Koroška bela or Poljane. The hike in this case lasts somewhere between 1h 30min – 2h. If you want a longer hike for a slightly bigger challenge then prolong the hike to the top of the beautiful mountain Stol. Over the Žirovnica mountain (the name of the hiking trail in Žirovnica path), you will reach the top between 3 and 4 hours.

Birds on Photos – Alpine chough

Alpine chough is a bird from the family of crows. It grows somewhere between 35 and 40 cm. It is recognizable by its red legs, black, shiny feathers, and a yellow beak. Alpine chough can be found on the steep slopes of the mountains, at a height above 1600 meters above sea level.

The tree line is between 1600 and 1800 meters above the sea.

Alpine choughs make a nest in the rocks and females lay between 3 and 6 eggs once a year. In addition to the fact that these are the highest nesting birds, it is also worth noting the fact that along with females, also males take care of the nest.

At the top of Stol, this interesting and beautiful birds will “ask” for some food.

If you want to get closer to the goal, use my starting point as a reference in maps and you can chose something closer to the destination. Sometimes I walk few kilometers, but sometimes even 10 or 12 km in one directon.
