Nanos – Beautiful hill in Slovenian Karst region

Nanos is a 12 km long karst plateau combined with many individual peaks. It is a geological jewel and a very popular destination for hikers. Nanos is a 12 km long karst plateau with many individual peaks.

It is an interesting natural landmark due to its position since it not only geologically separates the central part of Slovenia from the coast, it also represents a distinctive climatic point.

From Nanos on, we are talking about Primorska (coastal) Slovenia. Nanos is geologically incredibly interesting and offers stunning views of a large part of Slovenia. In good weather conditions, your view can reach Kravanke, the Julian Alps and the coast.

From the top of Nanos, you can enjoy view of mountains, valleys, all the way to the Adriatic sea (in clear weather).

It is worth noting that the highest peak is by no means the so-called Pleša, which rises 1262 m.n.m., but the Suhi Vrh in the south-eastern end of the plateau. Suhi Vrh is 1,313 meters above sea level. The Pleša (meaning “bald”) point in known mainly because it is visible from the highway from central Slovenia to the coast, but also because of the large transmitter, which is clearly visible.

During the descent in the direction of the Church of the St. Heron, we can climb to the third peak, Grmada, which rises 1207 above the sea. There is also an enrollment book and the view is quite stunning.

About the stone church of St. Heron

Nanos is a 12 km long karst plateau with many individual peaks. On the eastern slope of Nanos, you arrive at the Church of the St. Heron. The stone building, built in the classical seaside style, is visible from a great distance. In connection with the church, there are various legends. One of them speaks of the hermit, which is supposed to live there and help the people.

The people who St. Heron helped, returned him his kindness in a way, that they offered him food. Heronim also took care of the surrounding villages by creating a bonfire, which he lit as a warning that a severe storm is coming.

This legend can almost certainly be confirmed today, as from the Nanos, we can really see any change in weather, especially when it comes to threatening clouds that bring abundant precipitation. A stone church is built in Heron’s memorial.

The holy point on Nanos was first mentioned in 1360, but historians can not confirm with certainty that the church was built in a way we see it today. Church with altars of St. Hieronim, St. Ana, St. John the Baptist and St. Egidij was consecrated on September 15, 1624.

The stone church, which we see today, received its image sometime in the beginning of the 17th century and throughout history, it was repaired several times. Repairs were necessary due to severe weather conditions, but also because of the damage caused by a large number of travelers who were digging around the church, thinking they would find gold. The thorough renovation of the church was carried out in 1988, 1989 and 1990, when it was again consecrated (September 16, 1990).

Interesting fact: Nanos, as well as the entire Vipava valley, are famous for the wind called BURJA. It is known that gusts sometimes exceed the speed of 100 km / h. It is precisely Burja that is the reason for many deformed tree canopies, which only confirms how powerful the gust can be.
